On my 21st birthday Madisen insisted we throw her idea of a party. Her idea of a party usually meant loud, raucous and some what out of control; she wouldn't have it any other way. So when 2 am rolled around and everyone was still taking shots around a pool table, Madisen leaned over and pronounced that she was pleased "as a mother hen".She had had a lot more to drink than I had, but this was in typical Madisen fashion. "Are you have fun?" she yelled into my ear. "Of course!" We clicked our double shots of tequila together and Madisen squinted.I followed her gaze across the room to her boyfriend. His name was Jake or Dave or Alan.Only Madisen was able to keep track of her many flings. "I'll be riiiiiight back," and she sauntered over to him.I turned my gaze to the pool table next to me as they started making out. My boyfriend, Gary, was tall and ruggishly handsome in the way that a man six years older with two kids and a filthy front yard would be handsome.Madisen had introduced us late one night and against my better judgement, we started dating shortly there after.I hated when he drank; he had something of a nasty temper, so I was always quick to steer clear of him when he'd had more than 2 drinks in him. "Baby, come here for a sec," he slurred out.I stood up and took a quick glance at Madisen, who winked at me and continued groping Jake or Dave or Alan. "Yeah, Gary?" He stood with one hand steadying himself on the pool table. "I'm missing money.Did you go in my wallet?" "No." I smiled at Gary. "Are you sure?" He smiled back at me. "Of course I'm sure." He socked me squarely in the jaw and I fell into a bar stool. Before i even had time to react, Madisen was climbing over the pool table.I had never seen a bullet shoot out of a gun and hit someone before.Madisen was on top of him before anyone could get to her.She surprised him and he slammed back into the wall.Never missing a beat, Madisen took the opportunity to slam his head into the concrete wall.

| One day in August... |
[25 Oct 2004|03:56am] |
The day I took the wrong turn was the day that I decided that Madisen had the look of a sharp shooter. She was sitting in the bathroom at the public pool, but she was not wearing a bathing suit.I could tell almost immediately that she was skunked, not by smell though.I stood on the other side of the room and looked at her in the mirror. Her body looked as if it had given up and thrown itself into the first available seat. She was positioned haphazardly in a plastic blue chair and for a moment, I thought she was sleeping. She sat up with a start that surprised me so much that I took a step back.People surprised me a lot back then.I was 17, an only child, and a virgin to boot.My life was going on to an Ivy League college and then a white picket fence with two children and a husband who never worked weekends.I was the most boring thing in my entire life and I had no idea. "You're Olivia, right?" We stared at each other in the mirror.I bit my lip and looked down, and when i looked back up, she was bent over in the chair tying the laces on her work boots.I was still barefoot and dripping. "I'm Madisen...yes." I started to laugh, as did she.She got up and started to walk past me, out the door.I crossed over to my bag and started to dress.Madisen's head popped back inside the room. "I don't swim." She squinted her eyes as she said this. "Exactly," I told her as i pulled my tank top over my head, "sharp shooters don't need to swim." Her eyes lit up and she started to grin. "C'mon. We're going to hang out." And so I followed her out of the bathroom and out onto the concrete and past my old life. And it was the easiest thing I've ever done.
